Data verified June 2026

Do You Need an IDP in Poland?

Recommended — Required by Most Rental Companies

EU/EEA license holders can drive freely in Poland. Non-EU visitors should carry an IDP alongside their domestic license. Rental companies including Hertz, Europcar, and Avis require non-EU drivers to present an IDP at the counter. Polish police frequently conduct roadside checks, especially on major motorways.

Toll System Notice

Poland uses a mixed toll system. The A2 motorway (Warsaw–Poznan–German border) and A4 (Krakow–Katowice–Wroclaw) have traditional toll barriers. Other motorways use the e-TOLL electronic system. Download the e-TOLL PL app before your trip and register your license plate to avoid fines on e-TOLL sections.

Driving Rules in Poland

🚙

Drive on the Right

Poland drives on the right. Headlights must be on at all times year-round, day and night. Trams always have right of way. At unmarked intersections, traffic from the right has priority.

💰

A2/A4 Toll Motorways

The A2 and A4 have toll barriers accepting cash and cards. Other motorways use e-TOLL (app or OBU device). Warsaw to Krakow via A1/A4 costs approximately PLN 60–80 (~€14–18) in tolls one-way for a passenger car.

🍴

Alcohol Limits

Blood alcohol limit is 0.02% — effectively zero tolerance. Penalties are severe: fines up to PLN 5,000, license suspension, and potential imprisonment. Police checkpoints are common, especially on weekends and holidays.

🕐

Speed Limits & Cameras

Urban: 50 km/h (60 km/h at night). Rural: 90 km/h. Dual carriageways: 100–120 km/h. Motorways: 140 km/h. Speed cameras are common. On-the-spot fines for foreigners can reach PLN 5,000.

Renting a Car in Poland

Poland is a fantastic road trip destination — explore Krakow, the Tatra Mountains, the Masurian Lakes, and Baltic coast at great value.

📋

Required Documents

IDP (for non-EU drivers), original license, passport, and credit card. Minimum age is 21 at most agencies. Under-25 surcharges of €5–15/day are common. Cross-border travel may be restricted.

💰

Typical Costs

Compact cars from €15–30/day — among the cheapest in the EU. Full insurance adds €8–15/day. Fuel costs approximately PLN 6.50–7.00/liter (~€1.50–1.60). Excellent value for extended road trips.

“We drove from Warsaw to Krakow on the A1/A4 and then into the Tatra Mountains. The toll booths on the A2 are straightforward but make sure you download the e-TOLL app for other sections. The Hertz agent in Warsaw checked our IDP immediately. Polish roads have improved enormously and the countryside is beautiful.”
