🇵🇦 Drive Panama with Confidence
Know the rules. Carry the right documents. Enjoy the road.
Do You Need an IDP in Panama?
Required — Mandatory for All Foreign Drivers
Panama requires all foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their valid home license. Transit police (ATTT) conduct regular checkpoints, especially near the Canal Zone and on the Pan-American Highway.
Canal Zone & Panama City Traffic
Panama City traffic is notoriously congested, particularly around the Canal Zone and the Cinta Costera. Rush hours (7–9 AM and 4–7 PM) can double travel times. The Corredor Sur and Corredor Norte toll roads offer faster alternatives.
Driving Rules in Panama
Drive on the Right
Panama drives on the right side with left-hand-drive vehicles. Main highways are generally well-maintained. Secondary roads in rural areas can be rough, especially during the rainy season (May–December).
Pan-American Highway
The Pan-American Highway runs through Panama connecting Costa Rica to the Darien Gap. This well-maintained route is the main artery of the country. It ends at Yaviza — do not attempt to drive through the Darien Gap.
Road Safety
Blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Panamanian driving can be aggressive in the city. Seatbelts are mandatory. Night driving in rural areas is discouraged. Police checkpoints are common.
Speed Limits & Tolls
Urban: 40–60 km/h. Highways: 80–100 km/h. Panama has toll roads (Corredor Sur, Corredor Norte) that bypass Panama City congestion. Tolls paid via Panapass or at booths. Speed cameras are present.
Renting a Car in Panama

“We drove the Pan-American Highway from Panama City to Boquete and it was wonderful. The highway is excellent and the scenery changes dramatically. Our RoadSeal IDP was checked at two transit police stops.”
