Oman requires an IDP by law·Muscat–Salalah highway·Drive on the right
Data verified June 2026

Do You Need an IDP in Oman?

Yes — An IDP Is Legally Required

Omani traffic law requires all foreign visitors to carry a valid International Driving Permit alongside their original license. The Royal Oman Police enforce this strictly. Driving without an IDP can result in fines of up to OMR 100 and insurance complications in case of an accident.

Wadi Driving Advisory

Oman's wadis (riverbeds) are popular off-road destinations but flash floods can occur suddenly after rain. Never drive into flowing water, always use a 4x4, and check weather conditions before heading into wadis. Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid require careful approach.

Driving Rules in Oman

🚙

Drive on the Right

Oman drives on the right side of the road with left-hand-drive vehicles. Roads are generally excellent, especially the main Muscat–Salalah highway. Driving standards are good by regional standards.

🏜

Muscat–Salalah Route

The 1,000 km highway from Muscat to Salalah is a modern dual carriageway crossing the Empty Quarter desert. Fuel stations appear every 100–150 km. Watch for camels crossing, sand drifts, and strong crosswinds. Allow 9–10 hours for the drive.

💧

Wadi & Off-Road

Off-road driving is a major attraction in Oman. A 4x4 is essential for wadis, Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams, and the Wahiba Sands. Air down tires for sand driving and carry recovery equipment. Many wadis require river crossings.

🕐

Speed Limits

Urban roads: 40–60 km/h. Highways: 100–120 km/h. Speed cameras are extremely common and fines are steep (OMR 10+ per infraction). Fines must be cleared before leaving the country.

Renting a Car in Oman

Oman is one of the best countries in the Middle East for self-drive travel. Roads are modern, signage is clear, and distances are manageable.

📋

Required Documents

A valid IDP, your original driver's license, passport, and a credit card for the deposit. Minimum age is 21 at most agencies. Some 4x4 rentals require age 25+.

💰

Typical Costs

Compact cars from OMR 10–18/day ($26–47 USD). 4x4s for off-road from OMR 25–45/day. Full insurance is recommended, especially for off-road driving where standard coverage may not apply.

“We drove from Muscat through Jebel Shams and down to the Wahiba Sands in a rented 4x4. Oman's roads are superb and the off-road scenery is unmatched. Our RoadSeal IDP was checked at a police stop near Nizwa. An absolute must for driving in Oman.”
