Do You Need an IDP in Namibia?
Required — Mandatory for All Foreign Drivers
Namibia requires all foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their valid home license. This is strictly enforced by rental companies and traffic police. Self-drive is the most popular way to explore Namibia.
Gravel Road Driving
Over 80% of Namibian roads are gravel or sand. Gravel driving requires reduced speed (80 km/h maximum), increased following distance, and careful handling. Tire blowouts and loss of control on gravel are the leading causes of tourist accidents.
Driving Rules in Namibia
Drive on the Left
Namibia drives on the left with right-hand-drive vehicles. Roads are extremely quiet outside Windhoek. You may drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. Always carry extra water, food, and fuel.
Gravel Roads & Distances
Most of Namibia is accessed via gravel roads. Reduce speed to 80 km/h on gravel, increase following distance, and avoid sudden steering. Windhoek to Etosha is 450 km, mostly gravel. Carry two spare tires.
Wildlife on Roads
Wildlife crossings are common, especially near Etosha and along the Skeleton Coast. Kudu, springbok, and warthogs can appear suddenly. Dawn and dusk are highest risk. Always scan the road ahead.
Speed Limits & Fuel Stops
Tarred roads: 120 km/h. Gravel: 80 km/h recommended. Urban: 60 km/h. Fuel stations can be over 200 km apart. Always fill up when possible and carry a jerry can. Never drive at night.
