Do You Need an IDP in Malaysia?

Recommended — Required by Most Rental Companies

While some nationalities can legally drive in Malaysia with their home license for up to 3 months, rental companies frequently require an IDP at the counter. Police may also request one during traffic stops, especially outside Kuala Lumpur. Having an IDP ensures smooth interactions with both rental agencies and authorities.

Left-Hand Driving

Malaysia drives on the left side of the road with right-hand-drive vehicles. If you are from a right-hand driving country, take extra care at roundabouts and intersections. The adjustment period can be challenging, especially in busy KL traffic.

“We drove from KL to Penang via the North-South Expressway and it was a fantastic experience. The roads are excellent and the Touch 'n Go card made tolls effortless. Having our RoadSeal IDP meant we picked up the car in minutes at KLIA. Highly recommend driving in Malaysia.”
