🇰🇪 Drive Kenya with Confidence
Know the rules. Carry the right documents. Enjoy the road.
Do You Need an IDP in Kenya?
Yes — An IDP Is Legally Required
Kenyan law requires all foreign drivers to carry a valid International Driving Permit alongside their original license. This applies to both urban driving in Nairobi and self-drive safari trips through national parks and reserves. Police roadblocks are common on major routes and officers will ask to see your IDP.
Safari Self-Drive Note
If you plan to self-drive through the Masai Mara, Amboseli, or other national parks, your IDP is checked at park gates along with your entry permit. Some parks also require a 4x4 vehicle — confirm requirements before booking.
Driving Rules in Kenya
Drive on the Left
Kenya drives on the left side of the road with right-hand-drive vehicles. Roundabouts flow clockwise. Take extra caution when overtaking on two-lane highways — oncoming traffic can appear suddenly.
Matatu Traffic
Matatus (minibus taxis) are the backbone of Kenyan public transport. They stop unpredictably, weave through traffic, and rarely signal. Give them plenty of space and expect sudden stops at any time.
Safari Road Conditions
Roads inside national parks and reserves are unpaved and can become impassable during the rainy seasons (March–May, October–November). A 4x4 with high clearance is essential for safari routes.
Speed Limits
Urban roads: 50 km/h. Highways: 110 km/h. School zones: 30 km/h. Speed bumps are extremely common and often unmarked. Slow down when approaching any town or trading center.
Renting a Car in Kenya
Self-drive safari is increasingly popular in Kenya. Rental agencies offer everything from compact city cars to rugged 4x4 Land Cruisers.
Required Documents
A valid IDP, your original driver's license, passport, and a credit card for the deposit. Some agencies require a minimum age of 23 and at least 2 years of driving experience.
Typical Costs
Compact cars from $40–60/day. 4x4 safari vehicles from $80–150/day. Full insurance coverage is strongly recommended. A driver/guide can be hired for an additional $30–50/day.

“We self-drove through the Masai Mara and Amboseli in a rented Land Cruiser. Our RoadSeal IDP was checked at every park gate and at two police roadblocks. Having it ready made everything smooth. Seeing elephants with Kilimanjaro behind them — unforgettable.”
