IDP recommended for all foreign drivers·Ring Road & F-roads·Drive on the right

Do You Need an IDP in Iceland?

Recommended — Strongly Advised for All Foreign Drivers

Iceland accepts EU driving licenses directly. However, non-EU drivers are strongly advised to carry an IDP as an official translation of their license. Icelandic police and rental agencies regularly expect one, and without it you may face delays at checkpoints or be refused a rental car.

Ring Road & F-Road Advisory

Route 1 (Ring Road) circles the entire island (1,322 km) and is mostly paved. F-roads are highland tracks open only in summer (mid-June to September) and require a 4x4 vehicle. Driving a 2WD on F-roads is illegal and voids your insurance. River crossings on F-roads can be dangerous.

Driving Rules in Iceland

🚙

Drive on the Right

Iceland drives on the right side of the road. The Ring Road is mostly single-lane each direction. Watch for blind hills (blindhaed signs), single-lane bridges, and livestock on the road. Gravel sections exist in the east and north.

F-Roads & Highlands

F-roads (numbered F + number) are unpaved highland tracks requiring a 4x4. They involve river fords, loose gravel, and no cell service. Off-road driving anywhere in Iceland is illegal and carries heavy fines to protect fragile vegetation.

🌬

Weather & Wind

Icelandic weather changes rapidly. Strong winds can rip car doors off hinges and blow vehicles sideways. Always check road.is and vedur.is before driving. In winter, blizzards close roads without warning. Studded tires are mandatory November through April.

🕐

Speed Limits

Urban roads: 30-50 km/h. Paved rural roads: 90 km/h. Gravel roads: 80 km/h. Headlights must be on at all times year-round. Speed cameras are common and fines are steep.

Renting a Car in Iceland

Iceland is one of the world's best self-drive destinations. The Ring Road can be completed in 7-10 days, or explore the Westfjords and highlands for a deeper adventure.

📋

Required Documents

An IDP (recommended), your original license, passport, and credit card. Minimum age is 20-23 depending on vehicle class. For 4x4 rentals, age 23+ is typically required.

💰

Typical Costs

Compact cars from $55–85/day. 4x4s for F-roads from $120–200/day. Gravel protection and sand/ash insurance are essential add-ons unique to Iceland.

“We drove the Ring Road in 10 days, then ventured into the highlands on F-roads. The landscapes are otherworldly. Our RoadSeal IDP was essential at the rental counter in Keflavik — they checked it carefully before handing over the 4x4 keys.”

Iceland IDP FAQ

Is an International Driving Permit recommended for Iceland?

Yes. While Iceland accepts EU licenses, an IDP is strongly recommended for all foreign drivers. Rental agencies often request one, and it provides an official translation of your license.

Can I rent a car in Iceland without an IDP?

Some agencies rent to EU holders without an IDP, but many require one for all non-Icelandic drivers. Having an IDP avoids complications at pickup.

Are there tolls on Icelandic highways?

Mostly no. Iceland's roads, including the Ring Road, are generally toll-free. The main exception is one tunnel near Akureyri, where the toll is paid online after passing through.
