Do You Need an IDP in Hungary?

Recommended — Required by Most Rental Companies

EU/EEA license holders can drive freely in Hungary. Non-EU visitors should carry an IDP alongside their domestic license. Rental companies including Hertz, Europcar, and Avis require non-EU drivers to present an IDP. Hungarian police may request one during roadside checks, especially on motorways near the Austrian border.

Budapest Driving Warning

Budapest traffic is notoriously aggressive with heavy congestion during rush hours. Tram lines cross many roads and trams always have priority. Parking in central Pest and Buda is expensive and limited. Use the excellent metro and tram network for the city, and save the rental car for day trips to Lake Balaton, Eger, or the Hungarian countryside.

Driving Rules in Hungary

🚙

Drive on the Right

Hungary drives on the right. Headlights must be on at all times outside built-up areas, day and night. Trams always have right of way. At unmarked intersections, priority goes to traffic from the right.

💳

E-Vignette Required

An e-vignette is mandatory for all motorways. Options: 10 days (HUF 5,950), monthly (HUF 8,900), or annual (HUF 59,900). Purchase at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu or gas stations. Cameras enforce compliance with fines starting at HUF 14,875.

🍴

Zero Alcohol Tolerance

Hungary enforces a strict 0.0% blood alcohol limit. Any detectable alcohol leads to heavy fines starting at HUF 30,000 and potential license confiscation. Random breathalyzer checkpoints are common throughout the country.

🕐

Speed Limits & Cameras

Urban: 50 km/h. Rural: 90 km/h. Expressways: 110 km/h. Motorways: 130 km/h. Speed cameras are widespread. On-the-spot fines for foreign drivers range from HUF 5,000 to HUF 300,000 depending on severity.

Renting a Car in Hungary

Hungary is ideal for road trips — explore Lake Balaton, wine regions, and thermal spa towns across the countryside.

📋

Required Documents

IDP (for non-EU drivers), original license, passport, and credit card. Minimum age is 21 at most agencies. Under-25 surcharges may apply. Some agencies restrict cross-border travel to certain countries.

💰

Typical Costs

Compact cars from €18–35/day — among the cheapest in the EU. Full insurance adds €8–18/day. Fuel costs approximately HUF 600–650/liter (~€1.55–1.70). Hungary offers excellent value for road trips.

🏢

Top Rental Companies

Hertz — Budapest airport and city locations. Europcar — Good fleet variety. Avis — Wide coverage across Hungarian cities including Debrecen and Szeged.

“We picked up our rental at Budapest airport and drove straight to Lake Balaton for a week. The Europcar agent checked our IDP before handing over the keys. Buy the e-vignette online before leaving the airport — the M1 motorway starts right away. Budapest itself is much better by tram and metro.”
