Do You Need an IDP in Fiji?

Required — Mandatory for All Foreign Drivers

Fiji requires all foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their valid home license. Fijian police check documents at roadblocks, especially during holidays. Rental companies at Nadi Airport enforce IDP requirements.

Driving Rules in Fiji

🚙

Drive on the Left

Fiji drives on the left with right-hand-drive vehicles. Roads on Viti Levu form a circuit around the coast. Interior roads are rough and may require 4x4. Give way to oncoming traffic at single-lane bridges.

🏝

Viti Levu Circuit

The Kings Road (north) and Queens Road (south) form a circuit around Viti Levu, the main island. The full loop is approximately 500 km. Both roads are paved but narrow with scenic coastal and mountain sections.

🍴

Village Etiquette

Drive slowly through villages (30 km/h). Fijian villages have their own speed bumps and pedestrians walk on the road. Honking is considered rude near villages. Alcohol limit is 0.08%. Night driving is risky.

🕐

Speed Limits & Conditions

Urban: 50 km/h. Open roads: 80 km/h. Villages: 30–40 km/h. Road conditions vary — the Queens Road is generally better maintained. Heavy rain causes flooding and landslides. Single-lane bridges are common.

Renting a Car in Fiji

Car rental is available at Nadi International Airport and in Suva, with limited options on smaller islands.
