Do You Need an IDP in Croatia?

Recommended — Strongly Advised for Non-EU Drivers

Croatia accepts EU driving licenses directly. However, non-EU drivers are strongly advised to carry an IDP as an official translation of their license. Croatian police and rental agencies regularly expect one, and without it you may face delays at checkpoints or be refused a rental car.

Adriatic Coast Driving

The Adriatic coastal road is one of Europe's most scenic drives, featuring narrow winding roads, tunnels through mountains, and dramatic sea views. Summer traffic is extremely heavy near Split and Dubrovnik. Plan for slow going in July and August.

Driving Rules in Croatia

🚙

Drive on the Right

Croatia drives on the right side of the road. The motorway network is modern and well-maintained. Coastal roads are narrower and require more attention, especially near cliff edges.

🏘

Tunnels

Croatia has numerous tunnels along the coast, including the 5.7 km Sveti Rok tunnel. Headlights are mandatory in tunnels. Maintain safe following distance and do not change lanes inside tunnels.

🍷

Alcohol Limit

The blood alcohol limit is 0.05% (0.00% for drivers under 24). Random breathalyzer tests are common in summer tourist areas. Penalties include heavy fines and license confiscation.

🕐

Speed Limits

Urban roads: 50 km/h. Open roads: 90 km/h. Motorways: 130 km/h. Speed cameras are widespread. Headlights must be on at all times from October to March.

Renting a Car in Croatia

Croatia is ideal for road trips. Rent in Zagreb or Split and explore the coast, islands via ferries, and national parks at your own pace.

📋

Required Documents

An IDP (for non-EU drivers), your original license, passport, and credit card. Minimum age is 21 at most agencies. Cross-border travel to Bosnia or Montenegro may require extra paperwork.

💰

Typical Costs

Compact cars from EUR 30–50/day. Full insurance is recommended given narrow coastal roads. Tolls on the A1 Zagreb–Split motorway add approximately EUR 25 each way.

“We drove from Zagreb to Dubrovnik along the coast, stopping at Plitvice Lakes and Split. The coastal road is breathtaking but demanding. Our RoadSeal IDP made the rental pickup at Zagreb airport completely hassle-free.”
