🇧🇴 Drive Bolivia with Confidence
An IDP is required in Bolivia. Navigate high-altitude roads and challenging mountain passes.
Do You Need an IDP in Bolivia?
Required — Legally Mandatory for Foreign Drivers
Bolivia requires all foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit. Transit police (Transito) checkpoints are common in cities and on intercity routes. Documentation checks are thorough.
Key Warning
Bolivia includes the infamous Yungas Road (Death Road), which was once considered the world's most dangerous road. While a new bypass road now exists, many tourists still drive the old road for thrills. La Paz sits at 3,640m elevation; altitude sickness can impair driving ability.
Driving Rules in Bolivia
Drive on the Right
Bolivia drives on the right. Mountain roads are narrow with steep drop-offs. The vehicle going uphill typically has right of way on single-lane mountain passes.
Death Road
North Yungas Road drops 3,600m over 64 km from La Paz to Coroico. The old road is now mostly used by mountain bikers and thrill-seekers. Fog, rain, and vertical cliffs make it extremely dangerous.
Altitude Driving
Many Bolivian roads sit above 3,500m. Engines lose power at altitude. Allow extra time for acceleration and braking. Drivers may experience altitude sickness symptoms.
Speed Limits
Urban: 40 km/h. Rural: 80 km/h. Highway: 90 km/h. Road conditions rarely allow higher speeds. Speed enforcement is inconsistent.
