Vietnam is one of the world's great motorbike destinations. From the Hai Van Pass to the winding roads of Ha Giang, the country is best explored on two wheels. But the IDP rules catch many travelers off guard.
Do You Need an IDP for Vietnam?
Yes. Vietnam requires an International Driving Permit for all foreign drivers and riders. Specifically, Vietnam accepts the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP. Your IDP must include the motorcycle category if you plan to ride a motorbike.
Your IDP must include Category A (motorcycles) to legally ride a motorbike in Vietnam. A car-only IDP does not cover motorbike riding. Verify your categories before traveling.
The Hai Van Pass
The Hai Van Pass between Da Nang and Hue is Vietnam's most iconic motorbike route. The 21 km climb to 496 meters offers sweeping ocean views, misty mountain forests, and the thrill of riding one of Asia's best coastal roads.
Ha Giang Loop
The Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam is a 350 km circuit through some of Southeast Asia's most dramatic mountain scenery. The route takes 3–4 days and requires confident riding skills. Police checkpoints along the route check for IDPs.
Insurance and Safety
Most travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents if you lack a valid IDP with the correct category. This means medical costs fall entirely on you. Vietnamese hospitals require upfront payment. Riding without proper documentation is both illegal and financially reckless.
1. Get an IDP with motorcycle Category A. 2. Verify your travel insurance covers motorbike riding. 3. Rent from a reputable shop (inspect brakes, tires). 4. Always wear a helmet. 5. Carry your IDP and passport copy at all times.
