The pandemic fundamentally changed international travel, and IDP rules were not immune. Several countries updated their requirements, digital acceptance expanded, and the landscape of international driving documentation shifted.

Digital IDP Acceptance

Before 2020, almost all countries required a physical IDP document. The pandemic accelerated digital acceptance. Today, many countries and rental companies accept digital IDPs displayed on a phone or tablet, at least as interim documentation while physical copies are in transit.

Digital vs Physical

While digital acceptance has grown, a physical IDP remains the gold standard. Some police officers and rental counters in certain countries still insist on the physical document. Always have both when possible.

Extended Validity Periods

Several countries temporarily extended IDP validity during pandemic travel restrictions. While most have reverted to standard periods, the trend toward longer validity options (3-year IDPs) has accelerated. RoadSeal offers both 1-year and 3-year options.

Increased Enforcement

Counter-intuitively, many countries have increased IDP enforcement post-pandemic. With tourism volumes recovering, police and rental agencies are more strictly checking documentation. Countries including Thailand, Japan, and Italy have all tightened enforcement.

New Requirements

Some countries that previously had relaxed IDP policies have tightened them. More rental companies now require IDPs as standard. Digital verification systems are being tested in several countries, linking IDPs to national databases.

Post-Pandemic IDP Checklist

1. Always carry both digital and physical IDP. 2. Check current country requirements (rules changed). 3. Consider a 3-year IDP for flexibility. 4. Apply earlier than pre-pandemic (processing may take longer). 5. Verify rental company IDP policy before booking.
